Alice Chung

Korean-American mezzo-soprano Alice Chung is recognized for her “operatic tonal glamour” (Parterre).  Ms. Chung’s 2024-2025 season included role debuts as Amneris (Aida) with Boston Lyric Opera, Dinah (Trouble in Tahiti) with Annapolis Opera, the title role in Carmen with Hawai’i Opera Theatre, and Mother (Fearless) with Opera Delaware. She also joined the Modesto Symphony for her first Verdi Requiem last spring.

As a 2017 and 2019 alumna of the prestigious Merola Opera Program, the California-native garnered acclaim for her portrayals of Azucena (Il trovatore), Santuzza (Cavalleria rusticana), Augusta Tabor (The Ballad of Baby Doe), and Gertrude (Hamlet). Ms. Chung has returned to San Francisco, presenting her Schwabacher Debut Recital, Shoshana Foundation recital, and has covered roles at San Francisco Opera.

Ms. Chung has sung with Arizona Opera, Boston Modern Orchestra Project, Bucks County Symphony, Central City Opera, Chautauqua Opera, Houston Grand Opera, Kansas City Symphony, Lyric Opera of Kansas City, Naples Philharmonic, Ocean City Pops, Opera San Jose, Out of the Box Opera, Protestra, Tulsa Opera, United States Naval Academy, and West Edge Opera. Her role credits include Dame Quickly (Falstaff), Death (Le rossignol), Die Hexe (Hänsel und Gretel), Dritte Dame (Die Zauberflöte), Eduige (Rodelinda), Larina (Eugene Onegin), La Principessa (Suor Angelica), Ježibaba (Rusalka), Maddalena (Rigoletto), Mariana (Luisa Fernanda), Mrs. Grose (The Turn of the Screw), Suzuki (Madama Butterfly), and Zita (Gianni Schicchi).

Ms. Chung has been the recipient of numerous grants as well as a winner of several competitions, including the William Matheus Sullivan Foundation Award, Cooper-Bing Competition, Shoshana Foundation, the Loren L. Zachary Society Competition, and the National Vocal Competition hosted by the Young Patronesses of the Opera. She has also won awards in the Gerda Lissner Lieder/Song Competition, Mildred Miller International Voice Competition, and Orpheus Vocal Competition and through Opera Index, the Pasadena Opera Guild, Chautauqua Opera Guild, and the Metropolitan National Council Auditions.

During her time offstage, Ms. Chung serves as the artistic director of Wear Yellow Proudly. In response to the spike in xenophobia during the Covid-19 pandemic, she co-founded Wear Yellow Proudly as an arts and advocacy initiative devoted to bringing awareness to Asian culture by showcasing and celebrating Asian art and artists worldwide.
