SUMMARY:Recital: Davóne Tines\, bass-baritone & Ruckus\, “What Is Your Hand In This?”
DESCRIPTION:Curated by acclaimed bass-baritone Davóne Tines\, What is Your Hand in This? will take audiences on a powerful journey through four centuries of songs\, hymns\, ballads\, and newly commissioned works by Tines and Ruckus bassist Doug Balliett. As the nation reflects on the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence\, this program asks: How can this fragile American experiment hold? Can we find compassion for others? Can you find compassion for yourself? “Davóne Tines is changing what it means to be a classical singer” (The New Yorker). \nRuckus—”the world’s only period-instrument rock band” (San Francisco Classical Voice)—is a shapeshifting\, collaborative baroque ensemble with a visceral and playful approach to early music. Ruckus’s core is a continuo group: guitars\, keyboards\, cello\, bassoon and bass. The NYC-based ensemble aims to fuse the early-music movement’s questing\, creative spirit with the grit\, groove\, and jangle of American roots music. \nClick Here For Tickets

SUMMARY:Mozart’s Requiem featuring Zoe Allen\, soprano; Angela Brower\, mezzo-soprano; Omar Najmi\, tenor; & Edward Vogel\, baritone
DESCRIPTION:Mozart died at the age of 35 before he was able to complete his masterful Requiem. Maestro Gomez has conceived a “completion” by commissioning Tucson composer Dan Coleman to compose a work connecting the Requiem to Mozart’s choral gem Ave verum corpus. The quartet of soloists joining the TSO Chorus includes the return of mezzo-soprano Angela Brower for the second of two weeks\, as well as soprano Zoe Allen\, tenor Omar Najmi\, and baritone Edward Vogel. \nEstonian composer Arvo Pärt’s Cantus in Memorium Benjamin Britten\, is one of his most popular pieces and widely used in film. Equally well-known is Ravel’s Pavane pour une infante défunte. The composer’s title might lead the listener to think of this as a lament. Far from it\, it’s an evocation of the 16th-century stately Spanish court dance\, as it could have been danced by a little princess. \nClick Here For Tickets

SUMMARY:Karen Slack\, soprano & Miró Quartet (Daniel Ching\, violin; William Fedkenheuer\, violin; John Largess\, viola; & Joshua Gindele\, cello) featuring a premiere by Tamar-kali
DESCRIPTION:Heralded composer Tamar-kali—whose work spans contemporary pop\, classical\, and film music genres—has collaborated with the Miró Quartet and soprano Karen Slack to create this special celebration of the life\, times\, and works of composer and pianist Margaret Bonds. The first half of the program uses the Barber String Quartet to frame a general mid-twentieth-century context for Bonds’ work. Additional repertoire features works by her teacher\, Florence Price\, her friend William Grant Still\, and her younger contemporary\, George Walker. These relationships are integral to telling a more complete story about Bonds’ life as well as painting a broader picture of the African-American classical music community during that era. Tamar-kali’s new work\, co-commissioned by Arizona Friends of Chamber Music\, sets texts centered in the inspirational poetry of women of the Harlem Renaissance. \nClick Here For Tickets

SUMMARY:“Music of the Pioneers” featuring Will Liverman\, baritone
DESCRIPTION:What powerful dream would compel you to travel by wagon and foot across the entire country? Across the Great Plains and deserts\, through the Rocky Mountain passes? More than 500\,000 people set out on such a journey on the Oregon Trail\, California Trail\, and Mormon Trail. Whether on long\, perilous journeys or wherever one calls home\, music has communicated joy and provided a means for survival. \nThis All-American program—performed by the True Concord Choir and Chamber Players with soloist Metropolitan Opera star Will Liverman—includes Copland’s Old American Songs\, featuring Shall We Gather at the River and the beloved Simple Gifts\, as well as folk songs by Stephen Foster\, considered the father of American music\, and Spiritual arrangements by William Grant Still\, known as Dean of African American Composers. Standing shoulder to shoulder with these giants is William Billings and the Sacred Harp tradition\, perhaps the oldest form of truly American music. \nClick Here For Tickets
